2012 marked the 50th anniversary of "You Belong to Me" becoming a national hit. The legend and the legacy of the Duprees continue today...
The Duprees are known the world over for their romantic interpretations of the most beautiful love songs ever written. They have made a career out of giving new life to old hits. Starting out in the early sixties, in Jersey City, New Jersey, The Duprees were discovered by George Paxton of Coed Records and former big band leader. Impressed with their smooth vocal quality, he had them record Jo Stafford's 1950's ballad "You Belong To Me" with Big Band arrangements. It was an instant national hit and the group's first Million Seller. The unmistakable sound was born and the hits kept coming:
1962 You Belong To Me · 1962 My Own True Love · 1963 Gone With The Wind · 1963 Take Me As I Am · 1963 Why Don't You Believe Me · 1963 Have You Heard · 1963 Love Eyes · 1963 It's No Sin · 1963 The Sand And The Sea · 1964 It Isn't Fair · 1966 Let Them Talk · 1966 Exodus
Charlie Thomas’ Drifters:
The new Drifters' first release was the 1959 hit "There goes My Baby". Charlie was lead singer on two of the group's top 40 hits, "Sweets for My Sweet" and "When My Little Girl Is Smiling". He is the father of Charles "Happy" Thomas Jr. and grandfather to hip-hop producer Charlie "Bambu" Thomas
Charlie Thomas was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and was given a Pioneer Award by the Rhythm and Blues Foundation in 1999.
Linda Jansen, The Original Lead Singer of The Angels, best known for their 1963 No. 1 hit single, "My Boyfriend’s Back".
Acappella by Classic Sounds:
If you close your eyes and think back to Murray the K, the Brooklyn Paramount, the street lights on Belmont Avenue, the boulevards of Bensonhurst, straphanging from a leather strap on your way to see "Dem Bums", Frankie, Dion, WMCA Good Guys, cruising the streets in a '56 Chevy with the windows cranked down, singing to the tunes on your portable AM radio, and a host of other good times, you’ll know why “The Classic Sounds” sing DooWop. That's why a surgeon, a plumber, 2 teachers, and a musician can lean in close to each other, sing those back-up sounds that are second nature to us all, give you a little hand jive and a smile, and make you remember what "feel good" acappella music is all about.
